Anyone But You Star Addresses “Alleged Affair” With Sydney Sweeney After Rampant Speculation-TGN

  • Actor Glen Powell addresses rumors that he had an affair with Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney, calling the speculation “disorienting and unfair“.
  • Rumors began to swirl about the actors after set photos, coupled with various social media interactions, emerged earlier this year.
  • The rumors, regardless whether they are true or not, may actually help Anyone But You at the box office, as they raised awareness for the film more than traditional marking could have.

Anyone But You star Glen Powell addresses the speculation and rumors regarding his alleged affair with costar Sydney Sweeney. Directed by Will Gluck, the upcoming romantic comedy film stars Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) and Sweeney (Euphoria) as archenemies Ben and Bea, who must pretend to be a couple while attending a destination wedding in Australia. Months before the first Anyone But You trailer was released, photos from the set and various interactions on social media led to speculation that the two actors were romantically involved off-screen, despite both of them having partners.

Now, Powell addresses the Anyone But You rumors involving the “alleged affair” in a recent interview with Men’s Health. The actor offers a somewhat cryptic response, but doesn’t give the rumors too much credence. Check out Powell’s comment below:

“When all that stuff happened, you know, publicly, it felt disorienting and unfair. But what I’m realizing is that’s just a part of this gig now.”

Anyone But You’s Rumors Could Help The Movie

In order for a movie to be successful these days, a viral marketing component can be a huge advantage. This is especially true for an R-rated romantic comedy, a genre that (Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings not withstanding) is almost always now relegated to a streaming-only release.

The rumors about Powell and Sweeney emerged before anything was really known about the film, and the speculation undoubtedly raised awareness of the project to a degree that traditional marketing may not have. That’s not to say that this is in any way a studio tactic, but it would be hard to argue that the rumors haven’t benefited Anyone But You. It’s also notable, for example, that Powell didn’t outright deny the allegations in his comment, and the mystery is kept somewhat alive.

While awareness for Anyone But You is higher because of the rumors than it would have been otherwise, the true test will be whether the film performs at the box office. Both Powell and Sweeney are up-and-coming stars with some impressive titles under their belts, and Gluck, as the director of Easy A, evidently knows his way around the genre, making for a potentially electric combination. If Anyone But You is a hit, it will further establish Powell and Sweeney as part of the new generation of young, bankable movie stars, a feat that has proven difficult in recent years.
