Greta Gerwig explains why she has yet to read any reviews for her hit film Barbie. Barbie was a hit among both critics and viewers alike, bringing audiences into the theater in droves. To date, Barbie has made over $1.4 billion at the global box office and is currently the highest-grossing movie of 2023.

Speaking with Variety, Gerwig reveals that she has not yet read any Barbie reviews. While the director said that she may read reviews at some point in the future, she said that “right now it’s too fresh.” She has even shielded herself from looking at Barbie’s box office numbers, noting that “everything (she) know(s) about the movie’s success is an anecdote.” Check out the full quote from Gerwig below:

I’ll probably sit down with a binder sometime in February. But right now it’s too fresh. Everything I know about the movie’s success is an anecdote. Apparently, there was a very high percentage of people who said they couldn’t remember the last movie they saw in a movie theater.

Why Barbie Received Such A Positive Reception

Given the cultural zeitgeist surrounding Barbie, it is almost shocking that Gerwig has still managed to shield herself from Barbie’s reviews. Barbie was a 2023 gem in that its rampant box office success matched that of its astoundingly positive critical reviews. Barbie boasts a Certified Fresh 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is even considered a potential Oscar contender.

Part of Barbie’s critical success is due to the progressive take on the classic Mattel doll. Since making its debut in 1959, Barbie dolls have faced some criticism for setting unrealistic beauty standards. The dolls have revolutionized since then, however, and Barbie reflects this change. The Barbies and Kens in Barbie include a Weird Barbie, a conventional Barbie, dolls of different races, and even a Doctor Barbie played by a transgender actress.

Barbie’s diverse cast is coupled with an adventure plot that directly addresses themes of patriarchy and its dismantling. For a toy adaptation film to take on a plot of this gravity while still maintaining a comedic reference to the toys on which it is based is a screenwriting feat. Barbie takes this on somewhat seamlessly, helping to drive all those glowing Barbie reviews that Gerwig has yet to read.
