Barbie Secures The Biggest Box Office Title Of 2023, Mario Moved To Second Place-TGN

  • Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has become the domestic box office champion of 2023, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie with over $575.4 million earned in the U.S. and Canada.
  • The movie is also doing extremely well worldwide, recently surpassing $1.3 billion. If it earns another $50 million, it will surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie worldwide to become the highest-grossing movie of the year globally.
  • Barbie‘s upcoming IMAX release will further bolster its box office, but the movie’s impending VOD release will likely cause a slowdown.

Barbie continues to be a force to be reckoned with at the box office, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the 2023 domestic box office champion. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the Margot Robbie-starring film has been a hit with audiences and critics alike upon since its release last month. Based on the iconic Mattel toy, the Warner Bros. movie has been a box office sensation, crossing $1 billion worldwide earlier this month.

Now, TheWrap reports that Barbie‘s box office has crossed $575.4 domestically, meaning it has beaten The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the reigning domestic box office winner of 2023. Gerwig’s film is at over $1.3 billion worldwide and counting, with only about $50 million more needed in order to pass The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s worldwide total of $1.359 billion. When it does, it will become the highest-grossing movie of the year globally.

How Much Higher Will Barbie’s Box Office Go?

Barbie was always projected to do well, but the film has exceeded all expectations, with audiences around the world not able to get enough. The movie currently stands as the 14th highest-grossing movie of all time domestically, with Incredibles 2 ($608.6 million), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Last Jedi ($620.2 million), and The Avengers ($623.4 million) the next titles to beat. Some estimates have projected that Barbie‘s domestic total will exceed $700 million at the end of its run, which would put it close to the top 5 of all time in the U.S. and Canada.

Barbie is now confirmed to be getting an IMAX release for one week starting on September 22, which will bolster the film’s performance heading into its third month. However, with Barbie‘s VOD release date being set for September 5, it’s not clear if audiences will instead choose to just watch the movie at home.

It remains to be seen where Barbie will end up in the worldwide box office rankings, but the continued performance of the film and low weekend-to-weekend drops suggest that it still has gas left in the tank. What is clear, however, is that the movie has been a major win for Warner Bros in theaters, a trend that will likely continue when the film hits VOD. A sequel to Barbie has not yet been officially announced, but with numbers like these, it’s all but guaranteed.
