Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Emma Caulfield has teased the return of her character Anya in an upcoming Audible drama. Recently, it was announced that an audio-based Buffy sequel following Spike (James Marsters) and titled Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, would premiere on Audible on October 1, also featuring the return of Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Giles (Anthony Head), Drusilla (Juliet Landau), Tara (Amber Benson), Clem (James Charles Leary), and Jonathan (Danny Strong). However, not all of these characters – including vengeance-demon-turned-Xander-love-interest Anya – were alive by the end of the series.
On her official Instagram account, Caulfield teased her participation in the Buffy audio drama.
She shared a screenshot of the Entertainment Weekly report that originally announced the project. In addition to the image, she shared the caption “We’re back baby. Anya has lots to say.“
How Could Anya Return to the Buffyverse?
It makes sense to include Anya as part of any Buffy cast reunion. She is the sixth longest-running character on the series, having starred in 85 episodes after being introduced as a recurring character in season 3 and being upgraded to the main cast for seasons 5 through 7. However, one impediment to her return is the fact that she was run through with a sword in the series finale.
Anya’s abrupt and brutal death has not yet been reversed in Buffy canon, though the character did appear in the follow-up comic Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten. She appeared as a ghost in conversation with her former flame Xander, but it was later revealed that her appearance was faked by the demon D’Hoffryn. It has not yet been revealed if the comics are considered canon in the Audible drama, but either way, Anya’s return is still a mystery.
It’s possible that Anya’s death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7 won’t be reversed in this new story either. Anya could appear from beyond the grave or as part of a flashback. However, there are also a variety of supernatural ways she could return, considering the fact that the character Buffy has died twice in the series and been resurrected both times.
