Mayim Bialik Refuses To Host Celebrity Jeopardy, Show Selects New Host -TGN

  • Mayim Bialik has declined hosting duties for Celebrity Jeopardy season 2 as she stands in solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikers. Ken Jennings will replace her for the upcoming season.
  • Jeopardy season 40 has been affected by the strikes, with the show forced to use a combination of new and recycled material. Some previous winners have also refused to return, showing their support for the WGA.
  • Celebrity Jeopardy season 2 will have all original clues since the material was written before the WGA strike.

Celebrity Jeopardy season 2 has found a new host, with former host Mayim Bialik having reportedly declined the role. Serving as a spinoff of the popular and long-running quiz show, Celebrity Jeopardy season 1 premiered last year, featuring guests including Simu Liu, Andy Richter, Constance Wu, and Michael Cera, among others. While Bialik was tapped as the show’s host last spring, the current situation in Hollywood is leading to some changes for season 2.

Per Variety, Bialik has apparently rejected hosting duties for Celebrity Jeopardy season 2 as she stands in solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikers. Ken Jennings, who began his position as permanent co-host of regular Jeopardy last year, will be the host for the upcoming season of the spinoff, which premieres September 27.

How The Strikes Have Affected Jeopardy

The combined WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have essentially brought Hollywood to a standstill as writers and actors campaign for fair pay and contracts. Jeopardy has not been immune to the effects of the strikes, with the quiz show reliant on writers to generate the question clues. As the show continues, showrunner Michael Davies has revealed that material for the upcoming season will comprise some that was generated by writers before the strike, in addition to some recycled material from older seasons.

Although the show may have season 40 questions at the ready, it was revealed earlier this month that some previous Jeopardy winners are refusing to return to the show in an effort to support the striking WGA writers. The upcoming season will feature only returning champions from seasons 37 and 38 participating in a Second Chance Tournament. The show will feature Jennings as the sole host, with Bialik standing in solidarity with the WGA.

As for Celebrity Jeopardy, Davies has revealed that all material for the approaching season 2 was written before the WGA went on strike in May. This means that, unlike the material in the mothership series, the spinoff will have all original clues. The fact that Celebrity Jeopardy and its predecessor are continuing at all has been the subject of some controversy, but it’s clear that the powers that be are interested in pushing both shows forward regardless of the current situation in Hollywood.
