Denzel Washington & Dakota Fanning’s Collaboration Boosts Equalizer 3: “There’s Genuine Love”-TGN

Summary

  • The Equalizer 3 brings Denzel Washington’s action franchise to a close in spectacular fashion, with a story that began nearly a decade ago.
  • The film reunites Washington and director Antoine Fuqua, as well as Washington and Dakota Fanning from their previous collaboration in Man on Fire.
  • The genuine love between Washington and Fanning comes through in The Equalizer 3, making their reunion worth watching, especially for fans of Man on Fire.

The Equalizer 3 is set to bring the main story Denzel Washington’s biggest action franchise to a close in spectacular fashion. This latest collaboration between Washington and director Antoine Fuqua closes out a story that first began nearly a decade ago in 2014’s The Equalizer. In this story, Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall is doing his best to enjoy retirement in Southern Italy when he discovers that his friends are tied up with mob bosses; naturally, he is compelled to step into a dangerous situation once again.

The reunion of Washington and Fuqua isn’t the only one that took place on the set of The Equalizer 3. The film also stars Dakota Fanning, who last worked with Washington on the 2004 film Man on Fire. During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Antoine Fuqua reflected on the bond shared by Washington and Fanning and how it helps The Equalizer 3. See what he had to say below:

Antoine Fuqua: Well, obviously Denzel and Dakota have a relationship from Man on Fire, which was fantastic. We got blessed and lucky to have her want to do this film, and that love is still there between the two.

I think that in this story, it’s much more personal because she doesn’t know why he’s helping her. We discover that, but there’s that genuine love there between Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning that comes through.

Editor’s Note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the movie covered here would not exist without the labor of the writers and actors in both unions.

Watching Man On Fire Indirectly Enhances The Equalizer 3 Viewing Experience

Although Man on Fire isn’t related to The Equalizer franchise, it’s rewarding to see Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning together again, especially given the fact that Fanning was just 10 years old when Man on Fire was released. In both films, Washington also plays an ex-government operative; in Man on Fire, he’s ex-CIA, and in The Equalizer franchise, he’s a former U.S. Marine. The dynamic between Washington and Fanning is just similar enough across the two films that seeing how both actors return to working together on an action thriller is worth the double feature.

Even director Antoine Fuqua has likened The Equalizer 3 to Man on Fire, stopping just short of labeling his film a spiritual successor to Tony Scott’s 2004 movie. Although Fuqua says the subject was never outwardly discussed, he has revealed that it was on his mind when he thought about seeing Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington together once more. It’s surely an added bonus that as much as The Equalizer 3 is finishing out the story of Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall, it’s also delivering a reunion nearly 20 years in the making.
