The Exorcist: Believer has scored a major achievement at the box office this weekend. The project, which is the sixth Exorcist movie overall and the first of an intended trilogy of legacy sequels to the original 1973 classic, has not performed as well as was originally expected. After receiving a dismal 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its premiere in theaters, The Exorcist: Believer only took in an opening weekend of $26.5 million, below even the low end of its original projections.

Per Variety, the Exorcist: Believer box office has now passed a major milestone. In spite of its lukewarm reception both critically and commercially, it has now earned $107 million at the worldwide box office. This makes it the 34th movie of the year to pass the $100 million milestone, beating out other 2023 horror titles such as Talk To Me ($90 million), Saw X ($74.7 million), and The Boogeyman ($67.3 million).

How The Exorcist: Believer Compares to the Rest of the Franchise

Although the Exorcist: Believer release isn’t performing quite as expected, this box office total indicates that the franchise is actually on an upswing. This is even true critically, as Believer is in the middle of the Rotten Tomatoes ranking of Exorcist sequels, above 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning and 1977’s Exorcist II: The Heretic, both of which hold an 11% score. However, the commercial side is where The Exorcist: Believer truly shines relative to the other entries in the franchise.

The Exorcist: Believer is the highest-grossing Exorcist movie since the smash hit original classic, which has earned $441 million worldwide. In fact, Believer is the only other Exorcist movie to have grossed over $100 million worldwide. The next-highest was Exorcist: The Beginning, which earned $78.1 million and was already considerably higher than the other entries The Exorcist III ($39 million), Exorcist II ($30.7 million), and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist ($251,000).

This box office milestone is good news for the future of the Exorcist: Believer sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver, which is already set for release in 2025. Although Believer has already earned back its production budget, the trilogy has a long way to go to make up for the hefty $400 million price tag that the studio paid for the distribution rights to the franchise. If the next movie can earn a higher critic score and attract the attention of more viewers, the new branch of the franchise could very well be on its way to being profitable.
