Harry Potter actor Jessie Cave responds to co-star Miriam Margolyes’ recent commentary surrounding the fan base. Margolyes played the eccentric Professor Pomona Sprout in the Wizarding World, appearing in two movies total, The Chamber of Secrets and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Cave portrayed Lavender Brown in the Harry Potter series, appearing in the last three movies in the franchise.

Joined by fellow Harry Potter alum Devon Murray on a panel at Dream It Con (via Fr Conventions), Cave remarked on Margolyes’ recent commentary. She said that “it’s such a shame that that happened” and that she really doesn’t “like that she said that.”

In contrast to the opinion set forth by Margolyes, Cave argued that “it’s such an amazing thing that Harry Potter has done,” recognizing its fans that are both older and younger. Check out the full quote from Cave below:

It’s such a shame that that happened. You know how she is, she’s just a bit funny. And I think she didn’t mean for it to be taken like that, I hope. I really don’t like that she said that. It’s such an amazing thing that Harry Potter has done. It’s created a fan base that has aged and is still bonded through it, and it’s passed on to younger generations, and that’s what is so amazing. She probably just doesn’t understand that or get that. Just let her be. I think this situation is very unusual.

What Miriam Margolyes Said About Harry Potter Fans

Perhaps the Professor Sprout actor was trying to get a laugh with her statement rather than actually offend the fan base so deeply.

Margolyes first spoke out about aging Harry Potter fans recently, when she said that adult fans “should be over it by now.” The actor was insistent that “it was 25 years ago and it was for children.” She even questioned some fans’ desire to have Harry Potter-themed weddings, as that involves more mature activities.

Several days later, Margolyes was asked to clarify her Harry Potter comments in an appearance on ABC News Australia. On the program, she echoed similar thoughts about the age of the series and the fact that it should be consumed primarily by children. She added the statement, “If your balls have dropped, then it’s time to forget about it.”

The outlandishness of Margolyes’ phrasing is a point in Cave’s suggestion that Margolyes is “just a bit funny” and “didn’t mean for it to be taken like that.” Perhaps the Professor Sprout actor was trying to get a laugh with her statement rather than actually offend the fan base so deeply. Margolyes has not responded again, but in the meantime, it is good to know that at least some Harry Potter actors support the series’ older fans.

Harry Potter is a multimedia franchise about an orphaned boy who enrolls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family, and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. Adapted from the novels, Harry Potter is an eight-episode film saga that follows the journey of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, as they navigate the tricky world of growing up, school life, and magic. Starting from year one and moving to their seventh year, the films chronicle the students’ time at Hogwarts while unfurling a sinister plot that centers around the unsuspecting Harry. With the return of the dark wizard, Voldemort, the students and professors at Hogwarts will fight to carry on as the world around them may change forever. Harry Potter has expanded beyond the world of its films and novels with several video games, a spin-off film series titled Fantastic Beasts, and even attractions at Universal Studios.
