- Producer Basil Iwanyk is confident a John Wick 5 will be made at some point in the future, though isn’t looking to rush its development.
- If there is another John Wick movie, it will be a completely different story and not necessarily a continuation of the previous four movies. The timeline and direction are still unknown.
- While fans debate whether another movie is necessary, there are plans for a spinoff called Ballerina featuring Reeves and other franchise actors in cameo roles, expanding the universe without undoing John Wick’s powerful ending.
After plenty of back and forth on if the sequel will happen, franchise producer Basil Iwanyk weighs in on whether John Wick 5 is moving forward. Despite the latest movie ending with Keanu Reeves’ eponymous character seemingly meeting his end, Lionsgate announced two months after Chapter 4‘s release that they were moving forward with a fifth movie, looking to capitalize on the franchise-high reviews and box office numbers. Reeves and director Chad Stahelski have been more cautious in the possibility of continuing Wick’s story, acknowledging they are open to making more, but feeling uncertain of how to return.
In honor of the movie’s Oscars campaign, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with Basil Iwanyk to take a look at John Wick: Chapter 4 and beyond. When asked about being approached with the idea of Reeves dying in the new movie, not only did the franchise producer reveal that Reeves has been pushing for it for multiple movies, but that he’s still confident a John Wick 5 could be made, while also teasing when he thinks the story’s timeline would pick up. See what Iwanyk shared below:
So I think that what I love about the end of John Wick 4 is, if this means that there’s never another John Wick movie, it’s a nice elegant way of ending it, right? If there is another John Wick movie, which I do believe there will be, we don’t know what it is yet, but I do believe. I do feel like it will be a completely other book. If these movies were four chapters, you kind of blame it on the metaphor. The next John Wick will be another book. It won’t be like six months later from John Wick 4.
We just don’t know what that is. But we all love spending time together, and we love the process. The more time that goes by, the more we miss it. As demented as it sounds, and these movies are really hard to pull off, there’s something really exciting about making these movies. And I don’t even mean talking to you, and the box office. I just mean, mounting it, preparing for it, casting for it. It’s fun as s—t.
Does John Wick 5 Need To Happen?
Given John Wick: Chapter 4 offered a seemingly definitive conclusion for its eponymous character, fans of the franchise have been debating whether another movie is really needed. Reeves’ assassin had largely found closure by the end of the sequel, finally getting out from under the thumb of the High Table, having scored revenge for the death of his friend, Lance Reddick’s Charon, and putting Ian McShane’s Winston on a better path. He was also reunited with his wife in spirit by being buried next to her back in New York City, seemingly bringing him peace.
John Wick 4 and 5 were initially meant to be shot back-to-back before Reeves’ scheduling conflicts with The Matrix Resurrections, the COVID-19 pandemic and Stahelski’s own creative choices led to scrapping this plan.
Stahelski and Reeves have similarly echoed these concerns for the potential development of a fifth movie. The franchise’s director has confirmed that he and his star have general ideas for what they’d like to see in a future installment, but that they refuse to return without one another unless the story felt more than a simple cash grab revival of the character. Much like Iwanyk’s comments above, though, the best possible route for Wick’s return would be to allow some breathing room from Chapter 4 to better develop a meaningful story explaining his survival.
Even if a John Wick 5 doesn’t come to be, it doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end for Reeves’ tenure in the franchise. The upcoming spinoff Ballerina will feature him and many of his franchise co-stars reprising their roles in cameo form for the movie, and with the previous John Wick sequels introducing a wide range of characters and relationships that could be expanded upon in spinoffs/prequels, thus avoiding undoing his powerful Chapter 4 ending.
