Killers Of The Flower Moon’s Box Office Opening Weekend Can’t Shake Off Taylor Swift’s $129M Concert Movie-TGN

  • Killers of the Flower Moon had a solid opening weekend, but was surpassed by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour in box office earnings.
  • The movie, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is based on a true story of murders in the Osage Nation in the 1920s.
  • Despite its lower box office earnings, Killers of the Flower Moon faced a tough competitor in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which had a significant drop in earnings but still outperformed the movie.

Killers of the Flower Moon has taken in a solid opening weekend, though it fell behind the titanic concert documentary Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. The movie is the latest team-up between celebrated Oscar-winning director and actor duo Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Based on the nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann, it follows a spate of murders that rocked the Osage Nation in Oklahoma in the 1920s after oil was discovered under their territory.

Per Deadline, the Killers of the Flower Moon box office made $23 million in its domestic opening weekend. However, this wasn’t enough to claim the No. 1 spot for the weekend, as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour conquered with a $32 million week 2 take. The concert doc had a significant 66% drop after its smash hit opening weekend total of $92.8 million, but the global pop star nevertheless had the draw to outdo the Martin Scorsese movie, even though both boast epic run times that limit the number of theaters that can play them per day.

How Does Killers of the Flower Moon Compare With Other Recent Scorsese Movies?

Although the Killers of the Flower Moon release didn’t take No. 1 at the box office, it has nevertheless taken in the third-best opening weekend of the director’s career. It has fallen behind two other Scorsese-DiCaprio collaborations, namely 2006’s The Departed at $26.9 million and 2010’s Shutter Island at $41 million. The next-best title below Flower Moon would be 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street at $18.4 million, another feature starring DiCaprio.

It is important to note that the performance of Killers of the Flower Moon can’t be compared to Scorsese’s similarly epic 2019 feature The Irishman. That movie, which was eventually nominated for 10 Oscars, was only ever given a limited theatrical release before its Netflix premiere. Although its theatrical numbers can’t compare to the newer movie, its critical success was at a similar level, with the Killers of the Flower Moon Rotten Tomatoes score sitting at 92% compared to Irishman‘s 95%, and its commercial success was likewise somewhat comparable despite being measured on a different scale.

Regardless, Killers of the Flower Moon is performing well by the standards of Martin Scorsese’s much-lauded career. While Shutter Island and The Departed both claimed the No. 1 spot on their respective opening weekends, their new collaboration is nevertheless showing strong financial potential. Both of those titles also had less intense competition, as Shutter Island was the only wide release on its opening weekend and The Departed‘s only major competition was the comedies The Last Kiss and Employee of the Month, as well as the horror prequel Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.
