DiCaprio & Scorsese’s New Movie Makes History With An Industry-First Release Strategy Change-TGN

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s new movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, makes history with a release strategy that marks an industry first.

Summary

  • Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, will have a worldwide theatrical release on October 20.
  • The change in release strategy may be due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevents actors from promoting the movie before its release.
  • Releasing the film globally on the same date should create a sense of excitement and potentially help it achieve its full box office potential.

Killers of the Flower Moon makes history with a release strategy that marks an industry first. The latest from the legendary director Martin Scorsese, the upcoming film chronicles the series of Osage murders that occurred in Oklahoma during the 1920s with an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser. Killers of the Flower Moon was originally planned for a limited theatrical release on October 6 before expanding with a wide release on October 20.

Now, as revealed by Variety, the earlier Killers of the Flower Moon release date has been scrapped. By doing away with the limited release, Scorsese’s film will now roll out worldwide in theaters on October 20 and mark the first time a streaming movie has earned a worldwide rollout. This will still be followed by an undetermined streaming release on Apple TV+.

Why Killers Of The Flower Moon Changed Its Release Strategy

Though no reason for scrapping the limited release was disclosed, it is more than likely due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevents actors from promoting projects. If the strike continues long enough, the all-star Killers of the Flower Moon cast will be unable to promote the movie leading up to its release. Because of this, in combination with the lingering effects of the pandemic, movies have recently struggled to find box office success in their limited release window, with the only notable exception being the Oscar darling Everything Everywhere All at Once.

By releasing in theaters worldwide on October 20, Killers of the Flower Moon will feel more like an event. It was already beginning to feel that way considering it marks Scorsese’s sixth feature film collaboration with DiCaprio and his tenth with De Niro. Also, the Killers of the Flower Moon reviews after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival praised the movie as a monumental achievement and an epic masterpiece, which is sure to drum up excitement for its theatrical release. Considering the circumstances, its altered release strategy should help Killers of the Flower Moon achieve its full box office potential.
