“This Is Your Masterpiece”: Spielberg Honors Scorsese With Killers Of The Flower Moon Review-TGN

  • During a recent post-screening conversation, Steven Spielberg calls Killers of the Flower Moon Scorsese’s “masterpiece”.
  • Spielberg also touches on Scorsese’s powerful working relationship with DiCaprio and De Niro, encouraging the filmmaker to work with De Niro at least three more times in order to break a collaboration record set by John Ford and John Wayne.
  • Narrowing down Scorsese’s career to only one “masterpiece” is no easy task, with films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Irishman also making for strong candidates.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon gets high praise from director Steven Spielberg. Based on a book of the same name by author David Grann, Scorsese’s new historical epic chronicles the murders that took place in Osage County following the discovery of oil on their land in the 1920s. The Killers of the Flower Moon cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, and the film has thus far earned rave reviews from critics.

Now, as documented by The Playlist, Scorsese and Spielberg sat down for a long discussion about The Killers of the Floor Moon ending and everything else about the film after a recent screening. Spielberg evidently was impressed by the film, telling Scorsese: “You are the master of our medium, and this is your masterpiece.” He also shared his thoughts on the working relationship between Scorsese and frequent collaborators De Niro and DiCaprio, which you can check out below:

“It’s so amazing to see Bobby D and Leo D in this film together. I just realized Bobby D and Leo D. But this is your sixth collaboration with Leo. And you’re 11th with Bobby, and you’re only three films shy of tying the record with John Ford, who directed John Wayne 14 times. So, you can’t quit yet with Bobby, with Leo six films.”

Is Killers Of The Flower Moon Scorsese’s Masterpiece?

Along with Spielberg, Scorsese is widely regarded as one of the most talented directors working today. The Killers of the Flower Moon reviews have been glowing, but still, labeling the film “Scorsese’s masterpiece” is still a bold claim considering how many other classics the filmmaker has put out into the world over the course of his 50-year career.

Perhaps most likely to be labeled Scorsese’s masterpiece is 1990’s Goodfellas, a mafia movie about real-life mobster Henry Hill starring De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta. The movie has stood the test of time as maybe the best mafia movie ever made. For others, however, 1976’s Taxi Driver remains the best and most important movie of Scorsese’s career. The iconic film also stars De Niro, chronicling the steady decline of cab driver Travis Bickle as he embraces a life of increasing violence.

Other more recent Scorsese movies also cannot be discounted, including 2006’s The Departed and 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street. 2019’s The Irishman, similarly, feels like a final note in Scorsese’s exploration of the gangster movie genre, and was critically acclaimed. While Killers of the Flower Moon may indeed be Scorsese’s masterpiece to some, the challenge of choosing just one film from his long and successful career speaks to just how impactful the filmmaker has been on cinema.
