New Stephen King movie The Life of Chuck is teased by its star, Tom Hiddleston. The Life of Chuck is coming from seasoned horror director Mike Flanagan, and is based on a novella from King’s If It Bleeds. In addition to Hiddleston, the film will feature a main cast of Matthew Lillard, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Karen Gillan, Samantha Sloyan, and Mark Hamill.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz, Hiddleston talked about what a great time he had filming The Life of Chuck. Hiddleston teases parts of The Life of Chuck, comparing it to the renowned film The Shawshank Redemption.

In discussing the film, Hiddleston described the rare “warmth” present in The Life of Chuck, saying that the film seemed “to be resonant of the Stephen King who wrote The Shawshank Redemption.” Check out the full quote from Hiddleston below:

As I’m speaking to you now, I’ve wrapped my days on The Life of Chuck. And I had the most wonderful time with Mike Flanagan and his team and his company. There’s a real company of actors that he works with all the time, but also some new performers, and on this Stephen King. He is a kind of primary interpreter of Stephen King, I think. And what I love about this material and the short stories out there, was it seemed to be resonant of the Stephen King who wrote The Shawshank Redemption. There’s a warmth and a kind of spirit that’s really on the side of life in the story, that I really connected to when I read it. It was just the most extraordinary script. I connected to it immediately. And then, and it’s Mike Flanagan who’s written the screenplay. So when we met, I just said this is amazing. Can I come and do it? Can I please come and do it? And yeah, and we had a great time.

The Life of Chuck Could Be Fascinating Under Flanagan’s Direction

Hiddleston is right to call Flanagan a “primary interpreter of Stephen King.” Flanagan is known as a horror director, having directed a number of notable films and television shows, including Oculus, Hush, four episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher, and the entirety of Midnight Mass. Several of Flangan’s films have been King adaptations, including Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and now The Life of Chuck along with the upcoming Dark Tower series.

Hiddleston’s quote is also fascinating in its comparison to The Shawshank Redemption. Primarily known for his horror novels, King has written a number of short stories and novels–much like The Life of Chuck–outside of his typically-eerie genre parameters. Several other short stories and novellas have been developed into films that are just as incredible as adaptations of King’s horror works, including The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, and The Green Mile. This makes the comparison between The Life of Chuck and The Shawshank Redemption particularly intriguing, as the latter represents one of these highly-renowned works from King.

The combination of a Shawshank Redemption-like tone and Flanagan may just be a match made in heaven. Well-versed in horror genre films and in King’s writing, Flanagan is already a great director to take on any King story. Adding a “warmth” to the work, as Hiddleston describes, could be a stretch for Flanagan, but his fundamental understanding of King’s work lays the groundwork for a successful rendering of that internal horror landscape into a more genre-bending work. Flanagan’s execution of this adaptation will be revealed as The Life of Chuck continues its development.
