Martin Scorsese Plays The Movie Bracket Challenge In New TikTok (& An Absolute Classic Wins)-TGN

  • Martin Scorsese, known for his cinematic expertise, participates in a TikTok movie bracket challenge and chooses 2001: A Space Odyssey as his preferred film.
  • Despite Western genre films inspiring Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese surprises viewers by not choosing The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly in the bracket challenge.
  • The final face-off sees a contrast between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Parasite, with Scorsese ultimately choosing the former as the winner, highlighting the influence of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece.

Martin Scorsese goes to TikTok to take on the movie bracket challenge. This year, Scorsese directed the historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon, which is currently in theaters. Standing at 3 hours and 26 minutes long, Killers of the Flower Moon is getting rave reviews from critics and audiences, and is expected to do well in the awards season this fall.

The octogenarian director now participates in the TikTok movie bracket challenge, and a classic movie comes out on top for him. In a video posted by his daughter Francesca Scrosese, the director was challenged to pick his preferred film out of a series of titles including Inside Out, Dancer in the Dark, Lost in Translation, and Parasite.

As Scorsese participated in this TikTok trend, there were some tough face-offs, including choosing between Frozen and Inside Out, and Dancer and the Dark vs. Pan’s Labyrinth. The film that ultimately came out on top of the bracket was the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Martin Scorsese’s Film Bracket Involves Some Surprising Choices

Though TikTok is a newer film criticism tool for the director, Scorsese has long been known as a well-studied cinephile. His cinematic opinions have been made public over the years as he reacts to films, and now are more in the public eye with the advent of social media. For example, after the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese made an annotated Letterboxd list of the films that inspired all of his own films.

Western genre films were a huge inspiration for Killers of the Flower Moon, making it surprising that Scorsese did not choose The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

In responding to this film bracket, Scorsese makes some choices that would surprise viewers of the director’s work. Perhaps one of the most shocking is the first battle, between The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly and Birdman. Scorsese went with Birdman for this choice. While a Best Picture winner, Birdman does not have the same classic gravitas as its competitor. Coming from Scorsese specifically, who listed Western genre films as much of his inspiration for Killers of the Flower Moon in the aforementioned Letterboxd list, this choice is unusual.

The final face-off was also composed of two starkly different films: the winner, 2001: A Space Odyssey up against Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite. Made over 50 years apart, Parasite and 2001 have very different tones and styles, though both are masterpieces in their own right. It ultimately makes sense that Scorsese chose to give the win to one of his auteur predecessors in Kubrick’s brilliant 2001: A Space Odyssey.
