Mortal Kombat 2 producer Todd Garner corrects the latest filming update for the sequel, indicating production will be starting again soon. Filming for the video game adaptation was put on pause following the SAG-AFTRA actors strike, which was recently announced to have ended. Originally, it was reported the film would begin filming again in early 2024.

However, Todd Garner took to Twitter correcting the report, claiming the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 will restart filming before 2024.

This update confirms the video game movie will be hitting the ground running in the weeks following the end of the actors strike. It also underscores the importance of the project, which is clearly being prioritized as a major new release.

The upcoming sequel to 2021’s adaptation of the brutal fighting game series will see a major change, as Karl Urban joins the cast as Johnny Cage. Introducing the recognizable fighter will make the film stand out from its predecessor, which saw the protagonist mantle taken up by original character Cole Young (Lewis Tan). This latest installment is setting the stage for a faithful adaptation centered on more familiar characters from the games.

Filming for the sequel began in June 2023, but was suspended not long after because of the actors strike. However, now that SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP studios have struck a tentative deal, it appears filming for the movie will begin once again. Garner’s comments indicate shooting will restart in late 2023, meaning it won’t be long until an official announcement is made about the project’s production.

Mortal Kombat 2 promises familiar characters and blood-soaked battles reminiscent of the original game series. With production set to go underway soon, it won’t be long before classic characters reimagined for the big screen are revealed in the new sequel. It remains to be seen how the movie will fare compared to other recent video game adaptations, but an action focus with familiar faces should help it succeed.

Mortal Kombat 2 does not have an official release date yet.
