Meryl Streep thanked Only Murders in the Building showrunner John Hoffman for her onscreen romance with Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam. Premiered on August 8, the third season of Hulu’s hit murder mystery series finds Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver investigating the murder of actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) while juggling Oliver’s play which he is reinventing as a musical. Season 3 also introduces Streep as a struggling actress named Loretta Durkin who is cast in Oliver’s play and develops a romantic relationship with the director.

Talking to The Wrap in accordance with the WGA strike guidelines, Hoffman broke down the latest developments in Oliver and Loretta’s relationship in Only Murders in the Building season 3, episode 5. In the process, the showrunner revealed that Streep personally thanked him for writing the “beautiful” onscreen romance between her and Short. Read what Hoffman shared below:

It’s pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, to not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that. It’s just a beautiful romance that you buy, I think because of who these two characters are. But then you see Marty step up in ways that are incredible and nobody works harder at it, comes in with more intelligence to the work and then to watch him have these scenes that break your heart and have to be played with such dramatic poignancy, riding the line of keeping it comedic, keeping it mysterious… I’m amazed.

Where Is Oliver & Loretta’s Relationship Headed In Only Murders in the Building Season 3?

Ever since she amazed him with her audition and was cast in his play, Oliver and Loretta’s relationship has been slowly escalating. Their romantic connection brought new developments in Only Murders in the Building season 3, episode 5. Oliver goes to Loretta’s apartment for a dinner date, and later that night, they sleep together. They also take a ferry cruise overlooking New York City and, after smoking marijuana together, they realize they actually crossed paths decades ago.

Only Murders in the Building season 3, episode 5 also spelled new developments in Ben’s murder which makes Oliver suspicious of Loretta. Oliver is surprised when Loretta calls Ben a “f***ing pig,” the same words written on Ben’s dressing room mirror in red lipstick. After sleeping with Loretta in her apartment, Oliver finds a scrapbook full of news clippings about Ben. If Loretta is found to be guilty of Ben’s murder, her relationship with Oliver is likely ill-fated, but only if she is innocent can their connection continue blossoming.
