Star Trek: Voyager executive producer Brannon Braga remarked upon not being sure the direction Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in Star Trek: Picard is something he would have done as a writer. Braga was one of the creators of Seven of Nine, who quickly became arguably the most popular character on Voyager, and he also dated Jeri Ryan for several years. Seven’s comeback in Star Trek: Picard has been popular with fans, and the former Borg’s story resulted in Seven of Nine becoming the new Captain of the Enterprise at the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Appearing on The Shuttlepod Show in 2022, Brannon Braga was asked by hosts and Star Trek: Enterprise actors Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer if he would come back to write an Enterprise revival. Braga said he would, and then he mused about having a “sense of ownership” over characters he created, which seguewayed into his thoughts about Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard. Check out his quote and watch The Shuttlepod Show video at the 20:00 time stamp below:

It’s weird watching the episodes I’ve seen of Picard to see Seven of Nine taken in some directions that surprised me. But it’s just a difference of… I’m not sure I would have done, but then again, it might have been better than what I would have done.

Seven Of Nine’s Story In Star Trek: Picard Explained

Jeri Ryan’s comeback as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard was a big draw for fans, especially as her Star Trek: Voyager character had never met Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) from Star Trek: The Next Generation before. Picard revealed that after Voyager ended, Seven was rejected from Starfleet and returned to space to become a Fenris Ranger. Seven also began a romantic relationship with Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), which hit the skids in Picard season 3. Admiral Picard granted Seven a Starfleet field promotion, and she went on to become a Commander and First Officer of the USS Titan-A. Upon the death of Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), Seven became Acting Captain of the Titan and, after her heroism on Frontier Day, Seven of Nine was promoted to Captain of the USS Enterprise-G.

Since Brannon Braga’s appearance on The Shuttlepod Show was recorded in 2022, he hadn’t yet seen Star Trek: Picard season 3 and Seven becoming Captain of the Enterprise. Braga may have been reacting to the lonely and turbulent direction Seven’s life took post-Voyager as not what he would have done if he could still decide the direction of the character. Star Trek: Picard showrunners Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, and Terry Matalas evolved Seven of Nine far beyond her arc as a reclaimed Borg drone rediscovering her humanity on Star Trek: Voyager, but it’s hard to argue with the happy results of Seven of Nine now becoming a Captain to lead Picard’s proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy.
