The Killer has topped the Netflix chart. The movie is the latest directorial effort from David Fincher, who began a lucrative relationship with Netflix after executive producing their early hit show House of Cards, later becoming the unofficial showrunner and sometime director for the serial killer show Mindhunter as well as directing Mank, among other titles. It stars Michael Fassbender as an unnamed assassin who isn’t certain if he has a grip on his own mind.

Netflix has now calculated their global Top 10 chart for English-language movies. David Fincher’s The Killer has claimed the No. 1 spot on the chart thanks to 27.9 million viewers accumulating a total of 55.7 million hours viewed. There is a significant gulf between that and the No. 2 movie, Locked In starring Famke Janssen, which had 21.4 million hours viewed.

How The Killer Compares to Other Netflix Awards Contenders

The new Fincher movie is one of Netflix’s buzziest releases of the Fall. In addition to its success on the streamer’s global Top 10 chart, the The Killer Rotten Tomatoes score has reached a Certified Fresh total of 86%. This could potentially mean that the movie will have a good run come awards season.

Although Netflix has only been sharing viewing-hour information publicly for a few years, this allows The Killer to be compared to some of their other awards contenders and calculate its potential awards viability. Ultimately, it seems that the release comes out somewhere in the middle, between the high highs of hits like Glass Onion and Don’t Look Up and the middling numbers of sleepers like All Quiet on the Western Front (which got a boost when it was nominated, several months after its premiere). Check out how The Killer compares to some of Netflix’s Oscar-nominated movies in their first week:

Year

Title

First Week Viewing Hours

2023

The Killer

55.7 million

2022

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

82.1 million

2022

All Quiet on the Western Front

31.5 million

2022

Blonde

37.3 million

2021

Don’t Look Up

111 million

2021

The Power of the Dog

27.2 million

Given these figures and the fact that David Fincher’s previous Netflix movie Mank was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning two, this could spell good news for his new outing. Another point in the movie’s favor is the fact that The Killer cast unites two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton. While it remains to be seen if it gets any award recognition, this Netflix debut has turned out quite well for the thriller.
