The Marvels creative team teases whether or not the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie will have any X-Men hints. As 2023 gets ready to close out, Marvel Studios has one more Phase 5 movie to release as The Marvels is set to arrive in theaters this week, bringing Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers back to the MCU. However, the Captain Marvel sequel will be a team-up event as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau/Photon will be joining forces with Carol.
Screen Rant interviewed The Marvels director Nia DaCosta, executive producer Mary Livanos, and composer Laura Karpman as they were promoting the highly anticipated MCU adventure. One of the big theories that has been floating around is that the X-Men are somehow involved with The Marvels. As noticed by Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier, the production notes had references to music from X-Men 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. When they were asked if “that a musical cue for Kamala Khan, or is that something else we get to explore in The Marvels having to do with said X-Men,” the trio had this to say:
Nia DaCosta: The riff that they used in the show. Oh, this must have been Laura being inspired by that. Yeah. Well, I love X-Men too. I think it’s one of the best superhero movies of all time. It’s really special and has a very big place in my heart. But I didn’t consciously reference the music for that. But I think Laura maybe was inspired in that way.
Mary Livanos: Well, the idea of X anything is incredibly exciting, and that’s all I can say about that.
Laura Karpman: I think I’m going to let everybody go and enjoy the film and see what they see as far that goes. You’ll have some fun with that.
Why It Makes Sense For The Marvels To Potentially Set Up The X-Men
In the Ms. Marvel season 1 finale, it was established that rather than being an Inhuman, this version of Kamala is actually a mutant, which has now become the new status quo even in the comics. With Kamala being one of the first prominent mutants in the MCU, it begs the question of how The Marvels will explore that as Ms. Marvel season 2 has yet to be greenlit. However, a neat way for the MCU to tackle that is if the X-Men were to appear in The Marvels and perhaps become a helping force for Kamala.
Having The Marvels serve as a vehicle for a few of the famous X-Men characters to not only guide Kamala, but also have their proper setup for the reboot movie that is in the works would make a lot of sense. Even though the X-Men movie is still in the very early stages, it wouldn’t be shocking if Marvel Studios was already planting seeds for the upcoming reboot in other MCU projects. Time will tell how the X-Men may or may not factor into The Marvels, as this is, after all, Carol, Kamala, and Monica’s story.
The X-Men: The Animated Series theme has been heard in the MCU through Ms. Marvel and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Needless to say, the world is clearly ready and excited to meet the X-Men in the world of the MCU, especially as the later 20th Century Fox movies pretty much brought the franchise to its knees. Whether it is in The Marvels or upcoming Phase 5 or 6 projects, the mutants are obviously going to be a big focus for the MCU going forward. Hopefully, it won’t be much longer until the MCU starts hinting more about where they are going with the X-Men.
The Marvels, starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, arrives in theaters tonight.
