The Rookie: Feds Season 2’s Fate Finally Revealed By ABC-TGN

Summary

  • ABC has officially cancelled The Rookie: Feds after season 1.
  • The spinoff did not achieve the same level of success as its parent series, The Rookie, but still performed well and had a growing viewership with delayed viewing factored in.
  • The prolonged work stoppage due to strikes may have been a contributing factor in the show’s cancellation, as it became harder for networks to justify renewing a show that did not achieve runaway success.

The fate of The Rookie: Feds season 2 has now been revealed by ABC, following several months in which the Niecy Nash-Betts spinoff has hung in limbo. A police procedural spinoff of The Rookie, created by Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, the story followed Simone Clark (Nash-Betts), the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The show also starred Felix Solis, Frankie Faison, Britt Robertson, Kevin Zegers, and James Lesure.

Now, after the spinoff concluded season 1 in May 2023, TVLine has confirmed that The Rookie Feds season 2 will not be happening as the procedural has been cancelled. The network also announced that The Good Lawyer, the potential Good Doctor spinoff, would not be moving forward.

The Good Lawyer would have starred Kennedy McMann (CW’s Nancy Drew) and Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), focusing on McMann’s character who is a lawyer that has obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Why The Rookie: Feds Was Cancelled

The Rookie: Feds did not have the same initial breakout success that The Rookie had, but it was a solid performer in terms of ratings. The spinoff opened to 2.2 million viewers and a 0.3 in the coveted demo. But in a sign of how TV viewing has changed, the procedural grew its viewership once delayed viewing was factored in. It also benefited from shifting its timeslot and following its parent series, The Rookie.

The spinoff ultimately averaged 4.3 million viewers and an improved 0.5 demo, with live viewing plus seven-day viewership factored in. But per TVLine, out of all the dramas ABC aired during its 2022-2023 TV season, it only beat Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep in the demo. Both of those ABC shows were cancelled this past summer, as was Big Sky.

Still, the strikes might have played a bigger role in the cancellation. As studio heads waited for months to start negotiating with the writers and the actors, prolonging the work stoppage to historic levels, analysts and reporters have noted that it becomes more difficult for networks to justify a renewal of a show like The Rookie: Feds that is not a runaway success.
