Vampire Diaries: How Damon & Stefan’s On Screen Relationship Helped Paul Wesley & Ian Somerhalder’s Friendship-TGN

  • Paul Wesley reveals that his onscreen dynamic with Ian Somerhalder helped improve their real-life friendship, as their contrasting personalities created a strong onscreen chemistry.
  • The bond between Wesley and Somerhalder, who played brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, remains firm even after the series ended, as they have collaborated on a joint-owned bourbon brand called Brother’s Bond Bourbon.
  • Wesley has since starred in Tell Me a Story and joined the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, while Somerhalder has appeared in V Wars and served as an executive producer on the climate change documentary Kiss the Ground.

Paul Wesley reveals how his onscreen dynamic with The Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder helped improve their real life relationship. The pair, who played Stefan and Damon Salvatore respectively in the famous CW teen drama, are arguably one of the most iconic brotherly duos in television history. While The Vampire Diaries was widely successful for a number of reasons, notably its engaging plots and dynamic characters, it’s undeniable that Damon and Stefan’s sibling relationship was one of its strongest elements.

Speaking to Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Wesley reveals that the intricate, yet magnetic relationship that he shared with Somerhalder on The Vampire Diaries helped improve their actual friendship. He explains that he was polar opposites with Somerhalder when the series initially started filming. However, this polarity is precisely what helped their onscreen chemistry and ultimately their off-screen bond. Read his full quote below:

“It was pretty immediate. Ian and I are totally different human beings. We’re like oil and vinegar in that sense and I think that worked well for us in a yin and yang way. It worked great for our onscreen chemistry, it worked great for sort of having the two brothers being polar opposites, yin and yang energy. We really just kind of understood, immediately, that we would work well together, and that we would create a really good, dramatic television series with our different personalities. And I think that lends itself to our relationship off-screen which we sort of are very similar. Now we have a business together.

What Wesley & Somerhalder Have Done Since The Vampire Diaries

Damon and Stefan in The Vampire Diaries

Damon and Stefan’s onscreen relationship came to an end in 2017 after The CW pulled the plug on The Vampire Diaries after eight seasons. Over the course of those seasons, though, they went on quite the journey. Though they were close when they were young, Damon and Stefan began the series as enemies, as their brotherly bond had been disrupted during the 1800s when they both fell in love with the same woman. History repeated itself with Elena (Nina Dobrev), but Damon and Stefan would gradually find their way back to each other, further deepening their close relationship.

Since The Vampire Diaries, Wesley has starred in Kevin Williamson’s Tell Me a Story, playing a bartender and aspiring writer in both seasons of the psychological thriller. Most notably, he recently joined the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, starring as Captain James T. Kirk. Somerhalder, on the other hand, has appeared in V Wars, a science fiction horror flick, where he plays scientist and physician Dr. Luther Swann. He also appeared as himself in Kiss the Ground, a groundbreaking documentary about climate change, where he also served as executive producer.

While Wesley and Somerhalder have moved on from The Vampire Diaries, the bond that they shared on the show and even outside of it still firmly remains. In 2020, the pair collaborated on the release of their joint-owned bourbon brand called Brother’s Bond Bourbon, which is actually a reference to The Vampire Diaries. Onscreen, Stefan and Damon had many ups and downs, and the complex relationship served as the foundation for Wesley and Somerhalder’s own unique bond.
