Welcome to Wrexham has been renewed for season 3 on FX. A sports documentary series that premiered in 2022, Welcome to Wrexham documents the Welsh association football club Wrexham A.F.C. Their journey is told by the club’s owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The twist on the docuseries format, in terms of having the direct involvement of actors like Deadpool star Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s McElhenney, has proved to be a winning formula for acclaim. The show has been nominated for six Emmys and won two Critics’ Choice Television Awards.

Deadline has now confirmed that Welcome to Wrexham season 3 has been confirmed by FX. The third installment is expected to debut in 2024. In addition, the first two seasons of Welcome to Wrexham are available to stream.

How Did Welcome to Wrexham Come About?

Back in September 2020, McElhenney and Reynolds announced that they intended to buy Wrexham A.F.C., It’s a Welsh professional association football club based at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, North East Wales in the United Kingdom. The deal was done by February of the following year. At the time the deal was made, Wrexham played in the National League, which is the fifth tier of the English football league system.

The National League is below the Premier League and the three tiers of the English Football League.

The club was described as struggling, partly due to mismanagement and it was even suggested that the club might not exist any longer. In that sense, Welcome to Wrexham can be seen as a bit of an underdog story. The docuseries is said to be inspired by Sunderland ‘Till I Die, a 2018 documentary program about a similarly relegated team that is trying to win their way to a promotion.

Welcome to Wrexham is also influenced by writer Humphrey Ker, who’d wanted to purchase a club. It’s been mentioned that Ker was often watching association football in the Mythic Quest writers’ room, which is a Apple TV+ comedy that McElhenney co-created. This soon led to McElhenney growing interested in the aspects of promotion and demotion associated with football. It’s an interest that has paid off, as the FX award-winning docuseries is making its way back next year.
